My Grandfather And His Jeep
I spent my elementary years in a rustic place in the highlands of a mountainous province in the Philippines. It wasn’t that far but because of the road conditions back then, the nearest city is about 6 hours away, and it would take 8 hours to reach my hometown.
Grandpa was a former city boy who loved and embraced rural living when he got older. He would take us down on a long ride back to our hometown to visit relatives about once every month. When we arrive in the city during those days, my eyes would always turn green with envy when i see people in brand new cars with rolled up windows and air conditioning. I would always envision myself arriving one day into my hometown in an air conditioned automobile away from the heat and dust.
You can imagine how astonishing it is for me, to hear people and friends approach my grandpa and talk to him about his amazing jeep, how quick and easy it is for us to get to our hometown from where we came from. I would hear them say that they would be willing to trade their automobiles for my grandpa’s jeep. Are they crazy? They have a brand new rig, and ours was a second hand contraption.
That old jeep was purchased second hand by my grandfather. Firstly, he had it repainted a deep brown shade for a new look. Originally, the jeep didn’t have comfortable front seats so grandpa found some seats of an old car and had it reupholstered.
The trips we took with the jeep were absolutely long ones. Grandpa always had gasoline rations back then from his company. Some were gifts from some uncles i have. He always had that kind of effect on people. People would always love to please my grandfather. The original tank was too small for our trips and all his rations so he found this huge tank from an old truck and had it installed under the front seats of the jeep. It took up all of the front row area.
Grandpa had leather roofings installed on the jeep. He had a little electric fan connected to the ride, and installed his portable miniature television set to it. Despite me wanting a new car so much back then, I have to admit we did have an awesome ride.
The jeep stayed with us since I was in the third grade. When I was leaving for the capital to attend college, grandpa took me to the airport in the jeep. By then the jeep had served us for a decade already. When I cam home after graduation, my grandpa was too old to make the trip already. The jeep was still serving him at the time though.
That old jeep might have been pre-owned when we got it, but it fared and served better than all the other vehicles that we had. It has by far exceeded all the others when it came to performance and the memories we had with that old timer is by far more precious than any other ride we had.
Truly, used cars if loved and cared for can prove to be of greater value than new ones. Ours was by far the most precious ride of all.
