Axles 101

When your car feels a little different or is making different noises it is usually trying to tell you that it needs some work done on it. It’s always smart to look into the problem right away because the longer you drive while the noise goes on the more damage could happen to your car. But what kinds of noises can help you detect if you have problems with your axle?

The best indicator that your axle needs some work is if you are turning right or left and you can hear a clicking noise. This same sound can be heard when you lift your foot off of the accelerator. If you hear this noise at either of these times, your best bet is that your axle needs some fixing.

If you find that the noise is more of a whining or a low rumble you can know it isn’t your axel but something else in your engine like a bearing unit.

Axles have become a little more complicated in newer cars, but they are different with every car. Because they are a very important part of your steering system, it is important that they are well taken care of.

Older cars have a single axle while newer cars have what is now referred to as a split axle. This is a lot better for driving because each side is connected to a separate shaft so if you hit a rock on one side you can’t feel it on the other.

With a split axle, your wheels will actually move at different speeds as you turn a corner. This adds more than just comfort, but a sense of security and better traction. If you find yourself driving a lot on wet and slippery roads, this is something that can help.

To drive safely it is key that your axle be in good condition because it is such a key part of your steering. If you find out there is anything wrong with it, don’t hesitate to fix it.

There are so many distractions to avoid when driving. Turn down the music so that you can listen to your car. Always remember that if you hear or can feel something wrong with your car when you are driving, it is trying to tell you something. Don’t wait forever to get your car fixed, do it now.
