Difference Between Shocks and Struts

Shocks and Struts are so much more important to our driving then just keeping it a smooth drive. I’ve recently found out how chocks and struts work and how to know when it’s time to get them fixed.

When you experience bouncing and swaying as you drive, it can actually be a safety problem for the driver. We have more control the smoother the drive is. Shocks and struts aren’t just for comfort but for safety.

Have you ever driven in a car that you felt perfectly safe in because the control of the vehicle was perfect and the drive was perfectly smooth? This is all because of shocks and struts; most likely the care you were driving had superior hydraulic shocks.

The shocks and struts on your car work through oil being pushed through valves in the piston. This allows for resistance because of how little oil can be forced through, the oil can’t be compacted.

Your car will come with good shocks and struts but many of these are not the advanced shocks and struts that use nitrogen gas rather than hydraulic fluid. These are advanced and you will definitely be able to tell a difference in the control and the steadiness of your car.

It’s important to note that shocks and struts, just like anything else in your engine, will eventually wear out. Good maintenance work will always make them last longer though. Those that live in areas with a lot of ice and gravel will have to replace their shocks and struts much sooner than those that don’t.

Here are some indicators that your shocks and struts need to be replaced; do you bounce down the road as you drive? Has your car lost its tight feeling and rock back and forth at either a stop light/sign or a turn?
