The Origin Of Global Positioning System

To give you a brief idea of the topic at hand, the Global Positioning System (G.P.S. for short) is a system that was created by the United States Dept. of Defense made to aid in navigation with the help of a grid of 2 dozen satellites. Initially the use of GPS was meant to be limited to military usage only but by the time the world entered the 80’s,  the U.S. Government gave permission  for the system to be used by citizens as well. The GPS is a highly efficient system that is able to operate in the nastiest weather conditions, in any corner of the planet, non-stop throughout the year. To get GPS, you aren’t required to pay any subscription amount or installation fees. Satellite operated navigation or SatNav existed far before what people might think. The entire concept was discussed originally in 1967 but its use was only implemented years later in the 90’s as an army experiment. Due to its success in the army, it was made public soon after but due to its steep price, civilian automobile users where unable to afford it. The first civilians to find good use of it where aircraft pilots and surveyors who required precise measurements in distances.

In the last 10 years, the GPS has gained immense popularity as it has started being commercialized and sold at drastically lowered rates compared to when it initially came out. Several families make use of it to get to their destination despite not knowing the route themselves as miniature GPS systems are now placed in their vehicles to give directions. It is the portability of these new miniature versions that will be made use of by the masses. However there is a wide range of SatNav systems in the market today for you to choose from to suit your purpose.

The different types of systems available today include the common stand-alone Auto-Nav Systems which have complete road-maps and directions, multi-purpose hand held devices which are the slightly more compact versions of the Auto-Nav systems  but aren’t as comprehensive or feature rich, laptop Palm based systems, etc. The next time you step out of your house, your mobile phone, Palm top or laptop can all be used to help in navigation.

Some of the common uses of SatNav systems are mentioned in the following lines. The first is in planning your roadtrips. While you are traveling, GPS can help in identifying places to eat and sleep even before you pass them so that you know for certain that there will be a resting place up ahead. The systems have data on malls, hotels, restaurants and petrol pumps to aid you on your way.  The next application is the use of directions. You need not worry about getting lost the next time you venture out of your house because the SatNav GPS systems are there to guide your way. They give you directions to any destination that you feed into their system rather than letting you go around in circles and land up reaching somewhere you wouldn’t have intended on reaching!

The Auto-Nav System works seamlessly as it is able to determine locations extremely precisely on the Earth’s surface and give you the simplest route to that point.

The Auto-Nav system has enabled people to save time, energy and a lot of money while traveling. It has literally become a far superior replacement for maps and guides.
