How To : Become a Driving Instructor
The driving standards agency(DSA) set up the driving instructor register to improve the standard of driving instruction and tuition which was bieng delivered. Thier aim was to not only maintain instructor standards but to improve the level of instruction being given to student drivers.
The DSA set up a series of stringent test to see if the potential driving instructors(PDI) where capable of delivering driving tuition to a high standard. The DSA set up three individual tests the first one we will talk about is the theory and hazard perception test.
The first test is broken up into theory and hazard perception. In the theory you must score a overall mark of 85% to pass and score a minimum of 20 out of 25 in each mini 1/4 section
The second part of the test involves watching video clips of a camera fixed to a moving car. These video clips will have varying road conditions and your job will be to identify hazards. Depending on how fast you identify the hazards how high your score wll be. Thier will be 15 scoring hazards in 14 video clips the faster you react to the hazard the more points you score.
To progress on to part 2 you must pass both parts of the initial test. the second part of the test will test your ability to drive.
Part 2 is known as the advanced driving test. The test itself last around an hour taking in various road conditions with a senior examiner. To pass this test you must commit less than seven minor faults and no serious faults. If you are successful in step 2 you would then be allowed to undertake a trainee licence to allow you to prepare for the third test and most difficult test of instructor ability.
In the part three test which is the most difficult you will be tested on your ability to give instruction. your test will be taken over two parts. The first part the examiner will play the role of a pupil at the beginner stage and the second part he will be partly trained. Depending on which subject he chooses you will have to adjust your instruction accordingly.
You can attempt the first test as many times as you like but part 2 and 3 you are allowed only three attempts if you fail either three times you will have to resit all three test again after a waiting period of two years.
